«BRIDGING THE DIGITAL GENDER DIVIDE / INCLUDE, UPSKILL, INNOVATE»

«Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right. It is also a keystone of a prosperous, modern economy that provides sustainable inclusive growth. Recognising that gender equality is essential for ensuring that men and women can contribute fully for the betterment of societies and economies at large, G20 Leaders first committed to “women’s full economic and social participation” in Los Cabos in 2012. They then set the ambitious goal to reduce the gender gap in labour market participation by 25% by 2025 (the 25x25 target) at the 2014 Brisbane Summit, and committed to implementing a set of policies to improve the quality of women’s employment and the provision of support services. Since then, as documented by the OECD, most G20 countries have made progress, but much remains to be done. In 2016, the gap in labour market participation rates between men and women aged 15-64 was around 26% for G20 economies. Today the digital transformation provides new avenues for the economic empowerment of women and can contribute to greater gender equality. The Internet, digital platforms, mobile phones and digital financial services offer “leapfrog” opportunities for all and can help bridge the divide by giving women the possibility to earn additional income, increase their employment opportunities, and access knowledge and general information. We need to seize this opportunity to foster greater gender equality in the labour market, boost economic growth and build a more inclusive, digital world. (...).

Continue a ler.

«GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN THE UK»

Um excerto no capitulo das artes:

«PRIORITIES AND GAPS - Within the arts and media, there are strong examples of progress towards gender equality in production and a significant body of work spelling out clearly the detrimental impact of the way women and girls are portrayed. However, there is no consensus on the major change required to sustain a fundamental shift in the current paradigm; the entertainment industry is ‘slow to progress in creating compelling and complex roles for females’. In 2015 the LSE Commission on Gender Inequality and Power recommended the formation of a UK-wide standing committee tasked with addressing the flaws in data and analysis and commenting publicly in response to high-profile negative portrayals of women, and this offers a positive mechanism for best practice. More consistent gender expertise in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport would support the government to act across the cultural agenda and to address the links between media images and coverage and VAWG highlighted by the Leveson Report, which concluded: ‘the images may reflect a wider cultural failure to treat women with dignity and respect and/or a practice which, intentionally or not, has the effect of demeaning and degrading women».

«KEY INDICATORS FOR ASIA AND THE PACIFIC | While the region has done remarkably well, several challenges remain. Around 330 million people in Asia and the Pacific still live in extreme poverty»

«The Key Indicators for Asia and the Pacific 2017 (Key Indicators 2017), the 48th edition of this series, provides statistics on a comprehensive set of economic, financial, social, environmental, and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators for the 48 regional members of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
As the data in this publication demonstrates, Asia and the Pacific’s development continues to be impressive on many fronts. Between 2002 and 2013, approximately 707 million people in the region moved out of extreme poverty, based on the $1.90 a day poverty line. The region’s share of global GDP increased from 29% to 41%, in terms of purchasing power parity, between 2000 and 2016. Energy efficiency, measured as GDP per unit of energy use, improved 1.5% annually between 2000 and 2014. And the maternal mortality ratio was halved between 2000 and 2015. As statistics on participation in global value chains show, the region has cushioned the impact of the slowdown in global trade observed since 2011 by increasing the domestic content of its exports and relying more on domestic absorption as a driver of growth.
While the region has done remarkably well, several challenges remain. Around 330 million people in Asia and the Pacific still live in extreme poverty. Economic growth in the region has been accompanied by a rise in carbon dioxide emissions and a decline in renewable freshwater resources per capita. The region’s population is gradually aging, and by 2050 it is estimated that for the first time in history there will be roughly as many people in the region over the age of 65 as under the age of 15. DIREITOS HUMANOS | «World Report 2016»

«World Report 2016 summarizes key human rights issues in more than 90 countries and territories worldwide. It reflects investigative work that Human Rights Watch staff undertook in 2015, usually in close partnership with human rights activists in the country in focus.
In his keynote essay, Human Rights Watch Executive Director Kenneth Roth details how fear drove global developments of 2015. Fears of terror attacks and potential impact of refugee influx led to a scaling back of rights in Europe and other regions. In China, Ethiopia, India, and Russia, fears that social media will energize social and political movements helped to drive a disturbing global trend: the adoption of repressive new laws and policies targeting civil society. Roth traces the ways in which human rights law can and should guide responses to these major global developments». Veja mais.
