Protest and demonstrations often play a key role in affecting political change.

Our 1819: The Year’s Art display focuses on work from the year of the Peterloo Massacre. The massacre took place in St Peter’s Field, Manchester. A meeting calling for political reform was brutally broken up by soldiers. Fifteen people died.

This display includes Goldin’s slide projection as well as framed prints, posters and a maquette made when she was working on the photobook. The Ballad of Sexual Dependency was named after a song in Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera. Goldin described the work as capturing ‘the struggle in relationships between intimacy and autonomy… and what makes coupling so difficult’. To kick off Women's History Month, we've joined the National Museum of Women in the Arts as they champion women artists across the globe through their #5WomenArtists campaign. As part of this, we've announced five major solo exhibitions of women artists! You can look forward to seeing Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Paula Rego, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Maria Bartuszová and Haegue Yang – all coming to Tate in 2020-21! Plus, from next month Tate Britain presents 'Sixty Years' - a free display of British women artists from 1960 to the present day.

NA TATE | «Modigliani’s ‘modern women’»

«1. His nudes were very controversial

For his first and only solo exhibition, Modigliani painted a series of nudes, which are now among his most famous paintings. Legend has it that the nudes drew such a crowd around the gallery that it eventually caught the attention of a police officer. The officer was offended, not so much by their nudity as by the fact they displayed pubic hair, and promptly ordered them to be taken down. Whether or not this actually happened, the exhibition certainly caught the imagination of the public, and contributed to Modigliani's reputation as a scandalous playboy.

In addition, Modigliani’s ‘modern women’ are a symbol of sexuality and defiance. Their unapologetic stares and poses convey women in control of their bodies and their livelihoods (models at the time earned relatively good money). This, in itself, made a real statement». Saiba mais.
